CEPA: Is Union Between Romania And Moldova Possible?

  • 21.01.2026, 11:02

Despite the resistance of pro-Russian forces, the process has already been launched.

Moldovan President Maya Sandu's statement that she would personally vote in favor of unification with Romania has provoked strong reactions on both sides of the Prut River. In Chisinau, pro-Russian forces accused the head of state of "betrayal," while union supporters took her words as a long-awaited signal. The Moldovan authorities were quick to emphasize that it was the president's personal opinion and not official policy, writes CEPA (translated by Charter97.org).

In the energy sector, however, the rapprochement between the two countries has long ceased to be a hypothesis. In recent years, Moldova has been consistently building energy integration with Romania, a process that experts call one of the key steps toward possible unification.

The impetus for these changes has been pressure from Russia. Since 2021, Moscow has repeatedly cut gas supplies in an attempt to destabilize Moldova's pro-European government. In response, Chisinau accelerated the diversification of supplies, virtually abandoning its dependence on Russian resources.

The key role was played by the gas interconnector with Romania, which allowed Moldova to buy gas on the European market. The management of the strategic gas infrastructure was transferred to structures linked to the Romanian operator Transgaz, and the energy markets of the two countries began to actually converge.

Romania has consolidated its support for Moldova at the strategic level as well. The Romanian national energy strategy until 2035 calls the integration of infrastructure with Moldova "strategically important". A new high-voltage power transmission line between the countries will soon be put into operation.

Although the idea of political unification does not yet enjoy the support of the majority of citizens, energy integration shows that practical preparations for a close union are already underway, dictated by security and sustainability considerations.
