Earlier, the U.S. president threatened 100 percent duties on Canadian goods.

China is "successfully and completely" taking over Canada, US President Donald Trump has said. Earlier, he threatened 100 percent duties on Canadian goods if Ottawa enters into a trade agreement with Beijing.

"China is successfully and completely taking over the once great country of Canada. It's so sad to see it happen. I just hope they leave hockey alone," Trump wrote on Truth Social.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed that Washington intends to impose duties on Canadian goods if a free trade agreement between Canada and China is reached. "We can't allow Canada to become a loophole through which the Chinese can ship their cheap goods to the United States," Bessent told ABC News.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a strategic partnership agreement and tentative trade deal with China during a visit to Beijing on Jan. 16. Beijing is to lower tariffs on canola imports from Canada to about 15% by March 1 (they are now at 84%). China also pledges to introduce visa-free travel for Canadian tourists.
