U.S. Senators Cited A Law To Trump That Prohibits His Diesel Deal

Congress has explicitly banned the import of Russian energy resources.

Six U.S. senators from both parties issued a statement regarding the deal between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin on the supply of Russian diesel fuel. In statement, published on the website of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, it is noted that the U.S. has a ban on the import of Russian energy resources.

“In 2022, Congress explicitly banned the import of Russian energy resources to prevent American funds from financing Putin’s brutal war against Ukraine. Congress’s position was unequivocal: the U.S. must not import Russian oil until Russia ceases its aggression against Ukraine and its threats against our NATO allies,” the statement reads.

The senators note: Trump’s decision to import Russian diesel fuel directly contradicts this law, and they also point out that the administration did not consult with Congress or provide any explanation for its deal with Russia, even though the law requires it to do so. “The U.S. must not provide financial support to Putin while Russia continues to kill civilians in Ukraine. The administration must immediately change course,” the statement reads.

The statement was signed by Senators Jean Shaheen (a Democrat from New Hampshire), who serves as the senior minority member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee; Susan Collins (Republican from Maine); Richard Blumenthal (Democrat from Connecticut); Lisa Murkowski (Republican from Alaska); Ron Wyden (Democrat from Oregon); Tom Tillis (Republican from North Carolina) and John Curtis (Republican from Utah).

As previously reported by Dialog.UA, following Trump’s announcement of a fuel agreement with Putin, the U.S. Treasury Department issued a temporary license for the supply of Russian diesel fuel. Transactions involving Russian diesel fuel are permitted until April 7, 2027.

I noticed a discrepancy in the text: the beginning mentions six senators, but seven signatories are listed. If necessary, I will correct it to “seven.”
