NYT: Kyiv Ignored Trump's Proposal

  • 12.10.2026, 9:09

The presidential election is the prerogative of the Ukrainian people.

Ukraine ignored U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposal to remove Volodymyr Zelenskyy as president. The American leader criticized Zelenskyy for strikes on Russian oil refineries, accusing them of driving up global energy prices. According to him, Ukraine needs a “new president.”

In response, Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine is ready to stop striking Russian oil refineries, but only on the condition that Russia stops attacking Ukrainian energy infrastructure, according to The New York Times.

Shortly thereafter, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga stated that Zelenskyy “enjoys the support of the Ukrainian people, and the people have the right to decide.” “Statements from abroad only confirm that he is doing his job well,” he added.

Earlier, Zelenskyy had stated that he would hold elections if Russia agreed to a ceasefire. In a recent interview with ABC News, he emphasized that for voting to take place safely, the ceasefire must last at least 60 days.
