A Z-camp Propagandist Let Slip Some Information About The Malaysian Boeing

The truth has come to light.
On Sunday, a video from a September broadcast began circulating—first on social media and then in some media outlets—in which “Komsomolskaya Pravda” military analyst Viktor Baranets claims that a Malaysian Boeing was shot down by Russian officers. Judging by the circumstances of the crash described by Baranets, he confused the plane shot down over Donbas in 2014 with a South Korean Boeing destroyed by a Soviet fighter jet in 1983.
The statement was made on September 21 during the “Military Review” program on “Komsomolskaya Pravda” radio, as reported by “The Agency.” The full recording of the broadcast is still available on Rutube, as noted by “Agency. News”.
Responding to a listener’s question about whether the Ukrainian military had shot down the Malaysian Boeing, Baranets first recalled the passenger plane that Ukraine shot down over the Black Sea in 2001. In doing so, he confused the country from which that plane was flying: “Who told you that—excuse me, please—that the Malaysian Boeing was shot down by Ukraine? The one that was shot down by Ukraine was the one flying from Armenia over the Black Sea. That one, yes, was shot down. And the air defense system, as far as I recall, was stationed in Crimea.”
In reality, it was a Tu-154 operated by Sibir Airlines that was shot down; it was flying from Tel Aviv to Novosibirsk.
Then he moved on to the Malaysian Boeing.
“And the Malaysian Boeing was shot down by His Majesty’s Soviet officers—a Russian officer shot it down, yes—because that pest dared to enter our airspace. They warned it nicely—over the radio, with maneuvers, and even with a tracer round fired in front of the plane’s nose. It didn’t listen, the bastard. Well, that’s where it was sent,” Baranets said.
Barants was likely referring to the South Korean Boeing 747 shot down by a Soviet fighter jet over Sakhalin on September 1, 1983. 269 people were killed in that incident. The Soviet pilot did indeed fire shots before destroying the plane, but later admitted that he had not used tracer rounds.
The Malaysian Boeing MH17 was shot down over the Donbas on July 17, 2014. A total of 298 people were killed. A court in The Hague determined that the plane was destroyed by a missile from a Russian “Buk” system launched from territory controlled by separatists.
This isn’t his first scandal. The 79-year-old retired colonel—a former press secretary for the defense minister and now an employee of the pro-government newspaper *Komsomolskaya Pravda*—has been embroiled in controversy before. In May 2026, he was temporarily suspended from the airwaves after calling for the killing of Ukrainian children and insulting listeners. Baranets later apologized.
