A wave of solidarity from European capitals.

Representatives from European countries expressed their support for President Volodymyr Zelenskyy after White House Chief Donald Trump eased sanctions on Russian diesel fuel shipments and called for a change in Ukraine’s leadership. “We support Ukraine. We support President Zelenskyy,” said British Defense Minister Wes Streating in an interview with the BBC.

On Saturday, Trump said that Ukraine needs a new leader capable of “striking a deal” to end the war, and that Zelenskyy would be better off stopping attacks on Russian oil refineries and “not creating problems for the whole world.” In response, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said on Sunday that Berlin continues to “fully support” Zelenskyy, according to Euronews. “Europe needs stability, and that means we will most definitely continue to stand with Ukraine and its government,” he emphasized. President Emmanuel Macron also voiced his support for the Ukrainian president: “France will continue to stand with Ukraine and President Zelenskyy.”

According to the French leader, Paris advocates for a “real energy truce” between Russia and Ukraine; however, Moscow “continues to reject this, having recently intensified its attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure.”

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk is “absolutely convinced” that no one will be able to break Ukraine and its president in their “struggle against Russian aggression,” the politician wrote on X. “I assured [Zelenskyy] that he can count on the full solidarity of Poland and Europe with the Ukrainian people,” he said.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also supported the Ukrainian leader “in his fight for the freedom of his people,” while the head of European diplomacy Kaja Kallas stated that Europe will not soften its stance toward Russia. “Now is not the time to ease pressure on Russia, and Europe will not do so,” she wrote on X.
