A Substance In Tobacco Smoke May Have Sparked Life On Mars

Scientists have figured out where to look for signs of extraterrestrial life on the Red Planet.

In the past, there was a lot of liquid water on the surface of Mars. A new study suggests that some of this water may have contained formaldehyde. Formaldehyde could have triggered chemical reactions that might have led to the formation of organic molecules necessary for the emergence of life. The study’s findings were published in *The Planetary Science Journal*, according to EarthSky.

Scientists have found ample evidence that rivers, lakes, and possibly even an ocean of liquid water once existed on the surface of Mars. It is also believed that life may have existed on the Red Planet. Scientists believe that formaldehyde (CH₂O)—a colorless gas with a pungent odor that is a component of tobacco smoke and automobile exhaust—may have played an important role in the origin of life.

As the study showed, formaldehyde was produced in Mars’ ancient atmosphere. According to the scientists, when formaldehyde mixes with water, chemical reactions occur that lead to the formation of sugars, amino acids, and other complex organic molecules. It is precisely these molecules that are necessary for the origin of life.

Simulations showed that approximately 3.8–3.6 billion years ago, ultraviolet radiation broke down water molecules in Mars’ atmosphere. The released hydrogen contributed to the formation of formaldehyde when it reacted with carbon and oxygen.

This formaldehyde then fell to the surface of the Red Planet along with the rain. Scientists believe that areas with more water contained higher concentrations of formaldehyde.

It turned out that the heaviest rainfall—and, consequently, the highest accumulation of formaldehyde—occurred in the mountainous regions of the Red Planet.

Scientists believe that there were areas on Mars that were most favorable for the emergence of life. That is where we should look for traces of its presence.

It is worth noting that scientists are not claiming that extraterrestrial life exists on Mars today, but that it may have existed there in the past. If the study’s conclusions are correct, future missions to Mars will be able to detect signs of extraterrestrial life in the regions identified by the scientists.
