Which war caused diesel prices to spike the most?

The U.S.-Israel war against Iran has had a greater impact on global diesel fuel supplies than Ukraine’s strikes on Russian oil refineries. This is the conclusion reached by journalists at BBC.

According to Kpler analysts, in 2025, approximately 6.8 million barrels of diesel were supplied to the global market daily. By September 2026, this figure had fallen to 5.8 million barrels. The decline in supply led to a sharp rise in prices.
In the U.S., on October 5, the average price of diesel reached $1.64 per liter, approaching the record high of $1.72 per liter. Before the war with Iran began, the fuel cost about $0.92 per liter. In the United Kingdom, the price of diesel rose to 1.99 pounds per liter, approaching an all-time high.

Russian diesel exports fell from approximately 810,000 barrels per day in 2025 to 140,000 in September 2026. Ukrainian drone attacks on oil refineries played a significant role in this.
However, the war with Iran dealt an even heavier blow to supplies from the Middle East. Diesel exports from the Persian Gulf countries declined amid disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

“The conflict between the U.S. and Iran dealt a serious blow to global energy markets in 2026, but Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine is intensifying that pressure,” Paul de Leu of Robert Gordon University told the BBC.
