The pontiff's recovery is expected to take about a week.
Pope Leo XIV successfully underwent surgery to remove a tumor in his lung. The surgery took place on October 13 at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome, according to the Holy See Press Office.
“The surgery was successful, completed on schedule and in line with expectations, and the Pope has returned to his room,” the Vatican statement said.
As the Holy See clarified prior to the surgery, the surgical team was led by Professor Stefano Margaritora. Doctors removed the growth, which was discovered in the 71-year-old pontiff during a routine examination.
Due to his hospitalization, all of Leo XIV’s public audiences have been canceled until October 20. His recovery is expected to take about a week.
