If the Democrats win a majority.
Following the U.S. midterm elections, the country's defense minister Pete Hegset could face impeachment if the Democrats win a majority. This is reported by Foreign Policy.
The publication notes that this victory will allow Democrats to launch oversight hearings and call witnesses to testify about Hegset’s conduct of the war in Iran. The official is accused of violating two key laws: the War Powers Resolution and the War Crimes Act, which classifies violations of certain international humanitarian norms as federal crimes.
Republican Thomas Massie filed a resolution to impeach Hegset back in September and plans to seek support for it after the election. In addition to the war in Iran, the resolution was also prompted by the public executions of more than 220 alleged drug traffickers in the Caribbean and the eastern Pacific.
The publication also spoke with U.S. Representative Mike Levin, who supports the initiative to impeach Hegset. In particular, he stated that Hegset dragged the U.S. into war without taking public opinion into account. In addition, he recalled “Signalgate”—a scandal involving the discussion of the U.S. Secretary of Defense’s military plans via a messaging app. He also stated that there are already a significant number of Republicans in Congress who support Hegset’s removal.
