Ukraine And Russia Have Agreed To A Ceasefire In Oleshky

The White House credited Melania Trump with this achievement.

Russia and Ukraine have agreed to temporarily suspend hostilities in the city of Oleshky to deliver humanitarian aid, reports the White House. Washington reported that the ceasefire will take effect on October 29; the agreement was reached through the mediation of Melania Trump.

“The residents of Oleshky are living with limited electricity, on roads littered with landmines, and are regularly subjected to military attacks. It was absolutely clear that without my intervention, the delivery of humanitarian aid to the city and the evacuation of the elderly would have been impossible,” she said.

A White House statement said that the First Lady and her spokesperson “worked directly with Russian and Ukrainian leaders to define the terms of a local ceasefire,” and that Melania, “in her official capacity as an exclusive mediator, initiated negotiations with both countries.”

It is also reported that an independent American media organization was brought in to monitor and document the actions of Russian and Ukrainian groups on the ground throughout the entire process.

“My representative and I immediately activated the communication channel that we had established with Russia and Ukraine during the previous six reunifications of 34 children. Both countries promptly dispatched teams to coordinate complex operations, including demining. Since then, all parties have been working around the clock,” the First Lady explained.

Residents of Oleshky, according to “Nastoyashchee Vremya”, have fallen victim to an acute humanitarian crisis. Reports of widespread starvation have emerged. The city has been under Russian occupation since 2022. Ukrainian authorities have been warning about the catastrophic situation there in recent months. Oleshky has no electricity, water, or gas; ambulances do not come here, and stores are closed. People are surviving thanks to subsistence farming.

Ukraine has accused Russia of deliberately blockading Oleshky. Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets previously stated that negotiations with the Russian side on establishing a humanitarian corridor had broken down. Russian President Vladimir Putin, in turn, blamed the Ukrainian authorities for the humanitarian crisis in Oleshky. Both sides accused each other of shelling, which is preventing a resolution to the humanitarian crisis in Oleshky.
