The plant plays a very important role in supplying the Russian Armed Forces.
Well-known Ukrainian military analyst and blogger Alexander Kovalenko explained on his Telegram channel why the Ukrainian Armed Forces struck a Russian factory that produces synthetic rubber:
- As is well known, Ukrainian forces carried out a massive airstrike on “Tolyattikauchuk” today, which led some to ask: Why would Ukraine strike a factory that manufactures tires? Is it a military facility, and why waste ammunition on it?
As trite as the answer may sound, “Tolyattikauchuk” plays a very important role in supplying the Russian army with a wide range of products.
First, and most obviously, the plant produces synthetic rubbers used in the manufacture of tires, seals, and other rubber products for military equipment.
Specifically, the plant produces:
Butadiene-styrene rubber — Truck tires, specialty tires, rubber products; Isoprene rubber — Tires, elastic parts, and rubber components; Butyl rubber — Airtight chambers, seals, and various insulation and sealing products; Butadiene and other chemical products.
Second, rubber from the plant is supplied for the production of solid rocket fuel. Rubber acts as a polymeric binder that performs two functions simultaneously: it holds the oxidizer and fuel particles together in a single solid charge and provides it with mechanical integrity.
Thus, this facility—which at first glance appears to be a civilian enterprise—not only supplies Russia’s defense-industrial complex with rubber-fabric products for military equipment but also plays an active role in supplying the necessary polymeric materials for the production of solid rocket fuel.
