A German Brigade Will Monitor Military Activity In Belarus And Russia

A Bundeswehr unit will be stationed in Lithuania.

The Bundeswehr’s permanent contingent in Lithuania will use electronic warfare capabilities to provide early warning of military activity in the Kaliningrad Oblast of the Russian Federation and in Belarus.

This was reported to the Reuters by Vice Admiral Thomas Daum, commander of the German Armed Forces’ cyber and information unit.

The German brigade, which is scheduled to be fully deployed next year, will also collect data on Russian and Belarusian military transmitters and radar systems to update the electronic warfare databases used by German and allied forces.

“We will enter (the data) into electronic warfare databases, which will then alert all our systems if a new radar appears on the Belarusian side,” Daum said.

He noted that Russia’s activities in some regions of Europe have reached what he called “a second phase, the goal of which is to inflict damage,” but which does not reach the threshold of armed conflict.

“There is no war yet in the cyber-information sphere, but this is no longer peace,” noted the head of the Bundeswehr’s military cyber division.

The German military is currently testing electronic warfare systems in Lithuania, specifically drone detection systems, signal interceptors, jammers, and sensors designed to transmit battlefield data to analysts.

“Before the war in Ukraine, the German military had a hard time convincing commercial companies to supply them with such systems,” noted Patrick Esche, who heads the Bundeswehr’s Cyber Innovation Center.

According to him, the challenge has changed: now the goal is not simply to find suppliers, but to select the most promising technologies from a multitude of proposals.

“Over the past few decades, we haven’t invested too much in new capabilities. We used what we had because we were focused on missions abroad—in Afghanistan and elsewhere. Now there is a need to improve our capabilities,” said Daum.
