Ukraine's Missile Strike On The Tula Region Cut Short Putin's Speech

Ukraine’s strikes are already interrupting Putin’s speech on state television, marking a pivotal moment in this major war.

The missile threat in the Tula region interrupted a television segment in which Putin was being thanked for protecting African countries. While the federal channel was portraying the Russian president as a guarantor of security abroad, viewers in Russia itself had to listen to a warning about the threat, writes Astra.

On the regional broadcast of “Russia 24,” the alarm interrupted a segment about Putin’s meeting with the president of Equatorial Guinea Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo. Putin spoke about the right of countries to “independently choose their own path of development,” while his guest thanked Moscow for its protection “in the face of rising terrorism on the continent.”

The remarks by the President of Equatorial Guinea—that his country had never been subjected to terrorist attacks—created a particularly striking contrast. Russian viewers had to watch this report on security in a distant African country while being warned of a missile threat at home.

Overnight in the Tula Region, such a threat was announced twice: after 11:00 p.m. on October 27 and after 5:00 a.m. on October 28. Television segments featuring Putin were interrupted later as well—alerts about the all-clear appeared on NTV and “Russia 1.”

This was a routine public alert that took priority over the presidential segment. But the result for the television broadcast spoke volumes: the war intruded directly into the broadcast, where the Kremlin was demonstrating its ability to ensure the security of other countries.
