Can You Use Hot Tap Water For Cooking?

Experts explained that this could affect the body.

Hot tap water may contain higher levels of lead and other substances that leach into it from pipes, faucets, and plumbing fittings. Therefore, experts recommend using only cold water for cooking, making tea, and preparing infant formula; if necessary, the water can be heated separately.

This is reported by Martha Stewart.

What’s the problem

Nutrition expert Tracy Brigman explains that warm or hot tap water can leach out more minerals and other substances as it flows through the pipes. Special attention should be paid to homes with older plumbing, where materials containing lead may be present.

According to toxicology specialist Tatyana Chirs, hot water dissolves lead more quickly, so its concentration in the water may be higher. Another danger is that boiling does not remove lead and other chemical contaminants—it helps destroy many microorganisms. Moreover, during prolonged boiling, some of the water evaporates, which can cause the concentration of certain contaminants to increase.

Children, infants, and pregnant women are particularly sensitive to lead exposure. Prolonged exposure to this substance can negatively affect nervous system development, cognitive functions, and other aspects of health.

To reduce potential risks, experts recommend letting cold water run for 15–30 seconds before collecting it for cooking. If the water hasn’t been used for several days—for example, after a vacation—it’s recommended to let it run for 2–3 minutes. Additionally, you can use filters certified to reduce lead levels in water.

The conclusion is simple: if you need to quickly boil water for soup, pasta, rice, or tea, it’s better to fill a container with cold water and then heat it, rather than using hot water straight from the tap.
