The U.S. Is Organizing A Secret NATO Meeting In Poland

To discuss the future of the Alliance.

Representatives from seven NATO countries will meet in Poland in the coming weeks at the initiative of the United States. Washington wants to discuss the future of the Alliance and the further distribution of responsibility for its security.

According to Polsat News, Polish government sources have confirmed the preparations for the meeting.

Representatives of the defense ministries of the seven countries of the so-called Bergen Group—Germany, Norway, Sweden, the United States, Finland, the Netherlands, and Poland—were invited to the talks.

Washington initiated the meeting. It is expected that one of the key issues will be the further distribution of responsibility for NATO’s security.
The talks are to take place at a level similar to the previous meeting of this format in Bergen, which was attended, in particular, by deputy defense ministers and chiefs of staff.

In Poland, deputy ministers responsible for defense policy are expected to play a leading role in the talks. The U.S. side will be represented by Deputy Secretary of Defense Elbridge Colby.

At the same time, the composition of the meeting’s participants has sparked debate, as the United Kingdom, France, and the Baltic states were not invited.

According to media reports, this small-scale format is intended to prepare proposals that can later be discussed by all NATO member states.

Polish MEP Adam Belan noted that there are many similar consultation formats within NATO.

“There are many such formats within NATO, and there are also a great many meetings, for example, during ministerial or presidential summits in the NATO format, because we know that NATO is currently being tested very frequently by the Russians,” he said.

Politico had previously reported on preparations for the meeting. The publication pointed out that a number of European NATO members—who spend significant amounts on defense and are allies of the U.S.—did not receive invitations to the talks organized by the Pentagon.
