The trial of the dictator and his wife will begin in 2027.
In the U.S., new charges have been filed against former Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores. They are accused of torturing political opponents and U.S. citizens in order to cling to power. This was reported by Reuters reported, citing the indictment. Nicolás Maduro and Cilia Flores have been in custody in the U.S. since January.
The indictment notes that, in addition to drug trafficking, the former Venezuelan president and his wife are charged with conspiracy to commit torture. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Nicolás Maduro ordered the arrest in 2013 of a Venezuelan officer suspected of plotting a coup d’état. During the interrogation, military counterintelligence officers struck the soldier with a bare wire about 20 times and suspended him by his arms and legs.
Another incident occurred in 2022, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. At that time, a U.S. citizen was detained at the Venezuelan border and accused of conspiring to assassinate Nicolás Maduro. He was tortured by military counterintelligence officers—who administered electric shocks to his hands, feet, and genitals.
In January, U.S. special forces abducted Nicolás Maduro and Celia Flores. They were taken to New York, where they were charged with narco-terrorism. The trial on the merits of the case will begin in the summer of 2027.
