Democrats gain full control of Congress, securing victories even in states that traditionally support Republicans.

The Democrats capitalized on voters’ dissatisfaction with Trump’s policies and the rising cost of living, managing to win seats in both “red” (Republican) states and key battleground states.

The Democrats’ victory in the Senate followed a decisive win in the House of Representatives, where they are expected to secure their largest majority in nearly twenty years.

The Democrats managed to win back five seats from the Republicans—in Iowa, Kansas, Ohio, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Texas (a state they had long dreamed of turning “blue”). In several of these states, Trump personally handpicked the candidates—often against the objections of fellow party members who feared that such candidates would prove weak in general elections.

According to NBC News exit polls, 43% of voters who participated in the midterm elections said that one of their motivations for voting was disagreement with Trump’s policies. Incidentally, his approval rating on Election Day was the lowest among all presidents over the past two decades.

71% of voters—including 41% of Republicans—also noted that Congress does not exercise sufficient oversight over Trump’s actions. Other key issues included corruption, the cost of living, immigration, and the war in Iran.
