For Ukrainians, this news has another dimension.

The Democrats aren't just gaining control in both chambers of Congress—they’re winning by a landslide. Votes are still being counted, but according to projections, the Democratic Party could have 54–55 seats in the Senate and more than 250 seats in the House of Representatives. The picture will become clearer closer to noon Ukrainian time.

Donald Trump has already stated that he will accept the election results and work with the Democrats. “I am absolutely willing to accept these results,” he told The New York Times. “We will work with the Democrats, and we will probably reach an agreement on something.” But he added that if his name had been on the ballots, the Republicans would have won across the country.

In reality, however, the Republican candidates nominated and endorsed by Trump lost even in traditionally Republican states. In some of these states, Democrats had not been elected to the Senate in decades. Texas (for the first time in 38 years), Kansas (in 94 years), South Carolina (in 28 years), North Carolina, Iowa, Ohio… And this applies not only to senators and members of Congress, but also to governors in many states.

For Ukrainians, this news has another dimension. Among the losers are strong allies of Ukraine in Congress. Republican Congressmen Brian Fitzpatrick, Mike Lawler, Rob Bresnagan, and Mike Carey. Senators Susan Collins and Darlene Graham (sister of Lindsey Graham). This is in addition to the pro-Ukrainian lawmakers whose terms in Congress end in January.

Another Republican in the House of Representatives familiar to Ukrainians—Victoria Spartz, a native of Chernihiv Oblast—also lost her election.

In short, as of midnight in Washington, D.C., this is the news. A big blue wave swept across America tonight.
