Major investigations will begin.
After the transfer of control of the House of Representatives and the Senate to the Democrats in the U.S., preparations are underway for a new phase of congressional investigations. As early as November, the future committee chairs will be able to notify citizens and organizations about potential participation in investigations, and once the new Congress convenes in January, they will have the authority to subpoena witnesses and request documents, according to CNN.
Shortly after the election results were announced, the leading Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, Robert Garcia, posted on social media X: “Hire lawyers.”
Senator Ron Wyden, who serves as chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, responded even more succinctly: “Subpoenas.”
Lawyers in Washington are already advising clients on the upcoming investigations and competing for the right to represent individuals and companies that may become the targets of these probes. In particular, the law firm Squire Patton Boggs sent its clients a list of possible areas of focus for future committee investigations.
However, Congress’s powers are not unlimited. The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump seeks to maintain the confidentiality of information within federal agencies, especially that pertaining to the president. Furthermore, the Department of Justice is unlikely to pursue criminal charges against officials who ignore Congress’s demands if the investigations involve Trump’s advisers and appointees in his administration.
