"Blue Tsunami" Takes On MAGA

Five Takeaways from Trump's Historic Defeat.
This is one of the biggest defeats for a sitting president in modern American history.
The Democrats scored a landslide victory in the U.S. midterm elections, gaining control of both houses of Congress and making gains even in traditionally Republican states. The party could gain up to 40 additional seats in the House of Representatives and at least seven in the Senate. The election results marked one of the most significant defeats for a sitting president in modern American history and have cast doubt on the future of the MAGA movement, according to Axios (translation by Charter97.org).
The publication highlights five key takeaways from the election.
First, the Democrats won Texas. After decades of failed attempts, the party secured the governorship and a Senate seat. Gina Inohosa became the first Latina to lead the state, and James Talarico defeated the Trump-backed candidate, Ken Paxton. The last time Democrats won a Senate seat from Texas was in 1988. Three-term Republican Governor Greg Abbott also suffered a defeat.
Second, the Republicans lost control of the Senate. The Democrats won in Kansas for the first time in 94 years and also took seats from the Republicans in Ohio, Iowa, North Carolina, and South Carolina. In Maine, they managed to defeat Senator Susan Collins, who had served five terms. As a result, the Democrats could secure a majority of 54 seats, and if they succeed in Alaska and Mississippi, they could increase it to 55 or 56.
Third, the MAGA coalition has fractured. The multiracial, working-class coalition that secured Trump’s return to the White House in 2024 has developed a serious crack. According to a nationwide AP poll, about 70% of voters under 30 and 60% of Latinos voted for Democratic candidates. In Texas’s Starr County, where Trump unexpectedly won in 2024, Talarico now leads Republicans by nearly 60 percentage points. That’s a 75-point shift in two years.
Fourth—the Republicans’ defense in the House of Representatives has collapsed. Democrats expect to win up to 255 seats—this would be the party’s largest majority since 2009. The defeat affected both MAGA supporters and moderate Republicans. Not even redistricting in favor of the Republicans helped. Immediately after the results were announced, the future chair of the House Oversight Committee, Robert Garcia, outlined the Democrats’ next step in two words: “Hire lawyers.”
Fifth—the outlook for the 2028 presidential election has changed. The Democrats’ victory has strengthened the position of a new generation of politicians, including Georgia Senator John Ossoff. The election of Keisha Lance Bottoms as governor of Georgia has also strengthened the Democrats’ position in the state: should Ossoff or Senator Raphael Warnock leave to join the presidential administration, she will be able to appoint a Democratic replacement for them.
For Vice President J.D. Vance, who is considered Trump’s chief political heir, the results were a serious blow. The unpopular war with Iran and the collapse of the president’s electoral coalition are complicating his prospects in the race for the White House.
“For a decade, Trump has been the center of gravity in American politics. Tuesday’s results show that this era may finally be coming to an end,” Axios concludes.
