What A Democratic Victory Would Mean For Ukraine And Iran

Kyiv can count on additional support.

A Democratic victory in the U.S. midterm elections could pave the way for additional military aid to Ukraine, while making it more difficult for the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump to fund a war with Iran. Having gained control of both chambers of Congress, Democrats will be able to influence the allocation of government funds, push their own legislation, and hold the White House accountable, writes Deutsche Welle.

Ukraine can count on additional support. Democrats have repeatedly criticized the Trump administration for cutting military and financial aid to Kyiv. Now they will be able to bring the issue of new arms deliveries and funding before Congress.

“They can push for bills that provide additional aid to Ukraine,” Bloomberg Government editor Brandon Konradis told DW. If Trump vetoes the bill, Congress can override the veto with a two-thirds majority in both chambers.

When it comes to Iran, the Democrats’ options are more limited. Trump launched a military operation in conjunction with Israel on February 28 without consulting Congress. Democrats have already tried to secure a ceasefire, but the White House ignored the relevant resolution.

“I don’t think Congress will have much authority here,” noted Brookings Institution expert Michael O’Hanlon. However, refusing to allocate funds for further military action could prevent the conflict from escalating.

At the same time, a Democratic victory does not mean a complete shift in U.S. foreign policy; Trump remains president.
