Politico: Republicans Blame Trump

A faction within the party advocates a “return to normalcy.”
In the recent midterm elections, the Republican Party suffered one of the worst defeats in its history, losing both houses of Congress. Republicans blame President Donald Trump for what happened. This is discussed in an article Politico.
The mood among Republicans is quite despondent. Party members believe that the president himself is the key reason for their massive defeat. The former chairman of the Monroe County Republican Party, Todd Gillman, has openly called on the party to distance itself as much as possible from Trump in an attempt to salvage its position. He also suggested that the party is “doomed” to poor results at least until 2030.
Among Trump’s key mistakes, Republicans cite the war with Iran, in which the U.S. has become bogged down. In their view, the operation was poorly planned. They also believe that Americans are annoyed and exhausted by the president’s rhetoric, as he resorts to insults and makes other statements that are unacceptable for someone in his position.
“All this talk about Nicki Minaj’s big butt. It’s just wearing people down. It’s really exhausting them,” Gillman noted.
The chairman of the Republican Party in Licking County (Ohio), Matt Dowell, pointed out Trump’s strange obsession with renaming bodies of water, as well as his fixation on Greenland.
“I think we’ll see part of the Republican Party start advocating for a return to normalcy… It’s about moving away from the Trump style… He goes too far too often,” Dole said.
Republican consultant Ryan Girduski noted that in his 18 months in office, Trump has managed to “completely destroy” the massive support he once enjoyed from the American public. Girduski suggested that after the defeat, Republicans will have more freedom and will be able to speak openly about what they really think of Trump and his policies.
