Hungary Is Phasing Out Russian Gas

And it is looking for other sources of oil.

Hungary must completely phase out Russian natural gas by the fall of 2027, as the European Union has set this clear deadline. Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Anita Orbán made this statement in an interview with the Hungarian publication Telex.

“The EU has set a clear deadline for the gradual phase-out of imports of Russian natural gas—that is, fall 2027,” the minister said.

In addition, Hungary is seeking other sources of oil. According to Orbán, the Hungarian energy company MOL is preparing its refineries to process non-Russian oil, which will be supplied from the south via the Croatian JANAF pipeline.

The country is taking advantage of an exemption from U.S. sanctions that allows it to purchase Russian oil until November 21 in order to transition to new technologies and begin purchasing oil from other suppliers.

At the same time, Orbán described Hungary as a potential major transit and distribution hub for gas and oil, thanks to its significant energy storage capacity, ties with neighboring countries, and MOL’s influence in the region.
