The politician identified decisive action in three areas as his main goal.
The Democratic leader in the U.S. House of Representatives Hakim Jeffries has officially announced his intention to run for Speaker of the House.
This was reported by Axios.
“I humbly ask for your support in my bid to become the next Speaker of the House of Representatives. Now we must bring about the sweeping changes demanded by the majority of the American people,” Jeffries wrote in a letter to his colleagues.
He added that “every member of our majority will play a significant role” and that his goal is to empower House Democrats to “take decisive action in three key areas.” These include:
accessibility;
accountability;
and American values.
Axios reports that although some of the newly elected Democrats and representatives from “red” districts have refused to confirm their support for Jeffries as Speaker, he is not expected to face serious opposition in the race for the position.
The publication explains that the majority won by the Democrats in the House elections on November 3 will further shield Jeffries from any potential rebels within his caucus.
Jeffries’ senior leadership team is also expected to be elected unopposed.
As a reminder, 56-year-old Brooklyn lawmaker Hakeem Jeffries may become Speaker of the House on January 3, when the new Congress holds its inaugural vote. He could become the first Black Speaker in the nation’s history and, if appointed, would succeed Republican Mike Johnson.
