The first such bills will be as early as June.
The signature of President Donald Trump will appear on U.S. paper money as early as this summer. It will be the first time a sitting president will sign U.S. money.
According to the Reuters news agency, which cites the U.S. Treasury Department.
The new bills, issued for the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence, will lack the signature of the treasurer for the first time in 165, although the money has usually borne the signatures of the treasurer and the Treasury secretary. It could take several weeks for the new bills to arrive at banks.
The first $100 bills signed by Trump and U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will be printed in June, with other bills to follow in the following months. It could take several weeks for the new bills to arrive at banks.
For now, the Treasury Department continues to issue bills bearing the signatures of former Treasury chief under Biden, Janet Yellen, and Treasury Secretary Lynn Malerba.
That would make Malerba the latest among treasurers whose signatures have appeared on U.S. federal money bills since 1861, when the U.S. government first issued them.
The current U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the move was appropriate for the 250th anniversary of the U.S., given the strong economic growth and financial stability in the United States during Trump's second term.
"There is no better way to celebrate the historic achievements of our great country and President Donald Trump than by issuing dollar bills bearing his name, and it is fitting that this historic currency be issued on the 250th anniversary of the president's birth," Bessent said.
Reuters notes that the signature change is yet another attempt by the Trump administration and its allies to place the president's name on buildings, institutions, government programs, warships and coins.
