Italian PM Names Most Effective 'weapon' For Peace In Ukraine

Economic pressure on Russia remains the most effective tool to achieve peace in Ukraine. This was stated by Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni, Reuters reported.

Commenting on a possible easing of restrictions on Russian gas imports, Meloni emphasized that sanctions pressure has already proved effective and requires a cautious approach going forward.

"The economic pressure that we have exerted on Russia in recent years is the most effective tool for achieving peace, so we must be very careful about further decisions," she said.

The head of the government also expressed hope that progress towards a peaceful settlement between Ukraine and Russia would take place before a full ban on Russian gas imports is imposed.

The statement came amid discussions within the energy sector. In particular, the head of the Eni company Claudio Descalzi earlier pointed out that it was still unclear what could replace about 20bn cubic meters of Russian liquefied gas.
