Details Of A Possible US-Iran Deal Become Known

The parties are seeking compromise on key issues.

According to Axios sources, the U.S. and Iran are discussing a potential deal centered on a partial unfreezing of Iranian assets and restrictions on Iran's nuclear program. So far, there are many differences between the two sides, but they may converge during talks in Pakistan's Islamabad scheduled for Sunday, April 19.

The basic idea is that Iran could gain access to about $20 billion in frozen funds in exchange for a series of nuclear steps. These include exporting or reprocessing Iranian enriched uranium and imposing a moratorium on its further enrichment.

Accios sources say the US initially offered a much smaller sum of about $6 billion, but with strict restrictions on using the money only for humanitarian goods. Iran countered by asking for much more, about 27 billion, and eventually a compromise of about 20 billion is being discussed.

A separate contentious issue remains the fate of enriched uranium (450 kilograms enriched to 60%). The US demands its complete removal from the country, while Iran proposes to keep it, but to reprocess, dilute or mix it with other types of uranium.

Compromise options are also being considered, when part of the material will remain in Iran and part will be transferred to a third country.

Another important point is a ban on uranium enrichment for a certain period of time. The U.S. wants it to be about 20 years, while Iran is proposing a much shorter period of about 5 years.

In addition, it is being discussed that Iran will be able to retain some nuclear facilities for peaceful purposes, but they must be located entirely on the surface, with no underground infrastructure.

It is not yet clear how Iran's missile program and that of its regional allies might be included in the deal.
