Britain Responds To US Threat To Reconsider Position On Falkland Islands

The US may stop recognizing the Falkland Islands as British territory.

The British Prime Minister's press office has responded to media reports that the US may stop recognizing the Falkland Islands as British territory, BBC reports.

The Falkland Islands, located in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean, are a British Overseas Territory. Britain's rights to the islands are disputed by Argentina. Previous U.S. administrations have officially recognized Britain's de facto administration of the islands, but have not taken an official position on sovereignty.

The day before, Reuters reported on an internal Pentagon email discussing options for punishing U.S. NATO allies who did not support the war against Iran.

A spokesman for the British Prime Minister's Office said, "The Falkland Islands overwhelmingly voted to remain a British Overseas Territory...Sovereignty belongs to the United Kingdom."

The publication of the Pentagon document and the British government's response came amid preparations for a state visit by King Charles III and Queen Camilla to the United States, during which they are due to meet with Donald Trump. The visit will begin on April 27 and last four days.
