A date has been named.
A newly discovered asteroid will approach Earth on Monday, May 18, flying at a distance of about 90,000 kilometers, ABC News reported. That distance is about a quarter of the distance separating the moon from Earth.
The object, designated 2026 JH2, was spotted just a few days ago by astronomers from five observatories, including Farpoint Observatory in Kansas and Mount Lemmon Observatory in Arizona. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory estimates the size of the celestial body to be about 15 to 30 meters. The asteroid is attributed to the Apollo class of near-Earth objects.
"These asteroids have an orbit that is larger than Earth's orbit around the Sun, and their trajectory intersects Earth's orbit," NASA noted.
Scientists are continuing to refine the orbit and physical characteristics of the celestial body. Current calculations show that there is no risk of collision of the asteroid with the Earth.
