Lithuania And Taiwan Intend To Strengthen Cooperation

The Lithuanian foreign minister revealed the details.

After the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) submitted an action plan to the Taiwanese mission in April to strengthen economic cooperation, a constructive, mutually beneficial outcome is expected in the end, says Foreign Minister Kiastutis Budrys, reports Delfi.

"I really want this process to be successful. On the Lithuanian side, we have done a lot, we have cooperated with various institutions, we have viewed this process in an open, realistic and benevolent way, realizing that political and state institutions can and should help businesses establish long-term, mutually beneficial partnerships," the minister told reporters on Wednesday.

"I hope that we will be able to complete this process. Coordination with the Taiwanese side is currently underway. When there are results, I will share them. I really want to believe that they will be in the same spirit as our relations - constructive," he emphasized.

In late April, Lithuanian Deputy Foreign Minister Vidmantas Verbickas and representatives of the Ministry of Economy and Innovation discussed the prepared action plan for economic cooperation between Lithuania and Taiwan with Constance Wang, head of the Taiwanese Mission.

The plan envisages cooperation in areas such as high technology, defense, finance, semiconductors, science and innovation, agriculture, legal regulation, and joint projects in Ukraine.

The two sides agreed to continue close dialogue and move to the stage of implementation of concrete measures in the near future to ensure that the planned initiatives will bring tangible benefits to the economies of Lithuania and Taiwan, as well as contribute to the achievement of common strategic goals.

The meeting agreed to finalize the plan by the end of May, and discussed possible project implementation timelines, financing mechanisms and participation of institutional partners. The plan is planned to be signed in early June.

After the opening of the Taiwanese representative office in Lithuania more than four years ago, plans were announced to develop cooperation and attract large investments to the country. However, according to the Ministry of Economy and Innovation, although Taiwanese direct investment flows into the country have increased significantly over this period, their total amount remains modest.

Budris has previously said that Lithuania is moving from declarative expectations to a concrete plan aimed at strengthening economic cooperation with Taiwan, identifying specific projects and mutual benefits.
