This operation has attracted serious interest from keen observers.
On Saturday, May 23, a U.S. Bombardier ARTEMIS II reconnaissance aircraft made a highly atypical sortie using Georgian airspace. The purpose of the mission was to collect data on Russian military activity and monitor communications systems in the Black Sea and Caspian Sea regions. According to the Romanian publication adevarul.ro, the aircraft took off from the Mihail Cogalniceanu airbase and first followed its standard Black Sea route before moving on to patrol over Georgian territory.
This operation aroused serious interest among specialized observers. The main oddity was that the flight was over Georgia, whose current government is generally considered loyal to Moscow. Experts in aviation tracking emphasized that U.S. reconnaissance aircraft had never before moved so far eastward during their regular missions in the Black Sea region.
The technical capabilities of the ARTEMIS II reconnaissance system allow it to scan space at a distance of up to 600 kilometers. Thanks to this, the aircraft was able to remotely monitor the operation of radars and communication channels on the territory of the Russian Federation - in particular, in the Stavropol Territory and the Astrakhan Region, as well as virtually over the entire water area of the Caspian Sea. In addition, the northern part of Iran, including the cities of Rasht and Mahabad, also came within range of U.S. radars.
