Budapest has announced its intention to improve relations with Kyiv.

Hungary’s new government has lifted the ban on Ukrainian media, calling the previous administration’s decision a mistake. Budapest has announced a policy of improving relations with Ukraine and supporting the Ukrainian community.

This was reported on its page at Facebook page, Zoltán Tarr, Minister of Social Relations and Culture.

According to him, the decision was made jointly with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He recalled that the ban on Ukrainian media was introduced in 2025 in response to Ukraine’s decision to restrict the activities of certain Hungarian publications, which, according to Kyiv, were spreading Russian propaganda and violating journalistic standards.

Budapest called the block a mistake

Tár emphasized that independent Ukrainian media outlets should not be equated with media outlets spreading Russian propaganda.

According to him, the previous government used such decisions to exacerbate political conflicts, whereas the current administration seeks to improve relations with Ukraine and strengthen good-neighborly cooperation.

Ukrainian community to regain access to media

The decision to lift the ban was coordinated with the representative of the Ukrainian national minority in Hungary, Liliana Greksa.

Following the decision, she noted that free access to news in the Ukrainian language is extremely important both for the Ukrainian community and for refugees currently residing in Hungary. According to government officials, this step is intended to be part of a policy aimed at resuming constructive dialogue between Kyiv and Budapest.
