Ukraine Offered Germany A Deal To Get Patriot Missiles

Kiev is seeking to strengthen its air defense.

Ukraine has asked Germany to provide dozens of additional Patriot interceptor missiles from its stockpile this year as Kiev seeks to strengthen its air defense amid intensifying Russian strikes. This was reported by Bloomberg, citing two unnamed interlocutors familiar with the matter.

Ukraine has proposed an agreement under which it would receive the missiles in exchange for Germany handing over interceptors expected to be produced in the future, they said.

In April, Kiev (received a military aid package Germany will give Ukraine €11.5 billion - Belarus News - Charter'97) from Berlin for €4 billion, which includes funding for hundreds of Patriot missiles. The German government is considering Ukraine's request and has not yet made a decision, although an announcement could be made shortly before or during a NATO summit in July, one of the interlocutors said.

A spokesman for the German Defense Ministry declined to comment. A spokesman for President Vladimir Zelensky could not immediately comment on the information, saying he needed time to verify it.

Kiev continues to rely predominantly on the United States to supply missiles for Patriot. Although the conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran has shifted Washington's focus away from the war in Ukraine, deliveries of interceptor missiles continue on schedule, the media interlocutor said.

At the same time, Ukraine is under increasing pressure as Russia ramps up production of ballistic missiles and continues to improve their performance, he added.
