Russian Spy Ship Embarrasses Itself Off The Coast Of Sweden

The vessel broke down right in the middle of the mission.

The Russian ship *Akademik Nikolai Strakhov* broke down off the coast of Sweden—this was reported on July 18. The crew of the research vessel was likely monitoring targets in a NATO member country. The breakdown occurred south of the port of Ystad.

The Auonsson monitoring channel on social media platform X posted a chart showing the ship’s route. The ship was spotted by the Swedish Coast Guard and the Swedish Navy, which offered assistance to representatives of the occupying country but were refused.

Analysts note that the “Akademik Nikolai Strakhov” had left the port of Kaliningrad the day before the incident. Istad is a key logistics hub connecting Scandinavia with Central Europe and is strategically important for the deployment of NATO troops.

A striking example of Russia’s espionage tactics is the incident involving the tanker Eagle S near the Estlink undersea cable on December 26, 2024 — sabotage on the vessel resulted in damage and the interruption of power supply between Estonia and Finland.

Earlier, the website Charter97.org reported that a ship tasked with evacuating Russian troops from Syria had an accident on the high seas
