In Hungary, The Attorney General From The Orbán Era Is Stepping Down

In Hungary, Attorney General Gábor Balint Nád—who was appointed by the previous government and whose resignation had been demanded by the new Prime Minister Péter Magyar—has submitted his resignation.

This was reported by Index, according to "European Truth".

On Wednesday, July 22, Nád submitted his resignation, which, if approved, will result in the termination of his term effective August 25. He had served in the position for just over a year, since June 2025.

- Protecting the independence and authority of the judicial system, including the prosecutor’s office, is one of the cornerstones of a democratic system. The prosecutor’s office cannot become a tool of political struggle… To emphasize this, today I submitted, through the interim president of the republic, a letter of resignation addressed to the vice speaker of parliament, requesting that my term expire on August 25,” the prosecutor general stated.

He also complained of pressure that “went beyond the acceptable bounds of professional and public debate” and stated that the key reason for his decision was to ensure that the prosecutor’s office “is not harmed by an immoral, politically motivated struggle.”

“I no longer wish to be a party to the conflict that has been unleashed around me on false grounds and for political purposes, which has become a tool for further undermining trust in institutions,” Gábor Balint Nád concluded.

Prime Minister Péter Magyar, commenting on Nád’s resignation statement, said that the country “has gotten rid of yet another Orbán.”
