Putin's Last Chance: Sikorski Reveals The Kremlin's Plan

The Polish foreign minister highlighted several points.
Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski stated that the winter of 2026–2027 could be Russian dictator Vladimir Putin’s last hope to break Ukraine, as Russia’s resources are gradually being depleted. At the same time, he emphasized that it is the Kremlin that has been trying for decades to drive a wedge between Poles and Ukrainians, exploiting this conflict for its own geopolitical interests, according to TVP Info.
Sikorski emphasized that Moscow is the enemy of both countries, not Warsaw for Kyiv or vice versa. He cited historical examples of how Russia has played the card of national enmity for centuries to serve its own interests.
“Every time in history, starting in the 17th century, Russian agents have pitted us against the Ukrainians. We cannot be geopolitical naifs and fail to understand this logic,” the minister said.
Warning About Provocations Against NATO
In addition to the historical context, Sikorski drew attention to current security risks facing NATO member states. According to him, the Kremlin does not rule out hybrid operations against NATO member states, including Poland; however, publicly voicing such scenarios in and of itself reduces the likelihood of their implementation.
The meeting between Rubio and Lavrov offered no chance for an agreement
Separately, the minister commented on the meeting between U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, noting its brief duration and limited results.
“Ultimately, I don’t see any opportunities for cooperation, since Putin would have to scale back his ambitions regarding the invasion of Ukraine. He would have to realize that this war was a criminal mistake. But that probably won’t happen,” the Polish minister said.
Russia Is Selling Off Its Gold Reserves
Sikorski commented on Russia’s economic situation, citing specific figures on the sale of the country’s gold reserves. In the first two quarters of this year, Moscow sold 44 metric tons of gold, the highest figure on record.
According to the Polish foreign minister, these figures confirm that the Kremlin’s financial buffer is shrinking faster than it appears.
“This means that Russia is running out of resources. This winter may be Putin’s last hope to break Ukraine. And it is in our interest that Ukraine not only survive but also prevail in this war,” Sikorski concluded.
