Two Figures That Debunk Lukashenko’s Main Myths

That's one of those times when you have only yourself to blame.

Lukashenko came to power thanks to his fight against corruption. More precisely, on the wave of a vigorous pretense of that very fight.

It continues to this day. And the longer it goes on, the more farcical both the fighter himself and the results of his efforts appear. Former ministers and personal bodyguards are being sent to prison, but there’s no end to the number of officials with sticky fingers.

The latest statistics have just come in from the Supreme Court: in the first six months of 2026, the number of people convicted of corruption offenses increased by 12.5% compared to the same period in 2025.

And the long-serving ruler has been “saving” agriculture for three decades. So much so that even members of the Chamber are beginning to scare each other with the specter of meat and milk shortages.

Lukashenko is replacing regional governors, sending police generals to combat livestock deaths, and promising to make negligent administrators pay dearly and send slackers to the army, but the numbers are relentless:

According to internal statistics, 76,600 head of cattle died in Belarus in just the first six months of 2026. That’s 2,400 more than during the same period last year.

Lawmakers are even trying to formulate proposals to resolve the situation and are exposing attempts to gloss over the reality of the situation.
But the problem is that in this situation, we have only ourselves to blame. This includes Lukashenko, who is in no hurry to change the corrupt system, and his subordinates, who lack the will to point out the obvious to their boss.
