Romania Summoned The Russian Ambassador

Because of incidents involving drones.

The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Russian ambassador after Romanian fighter jets shot down the third drone in the last three days that had violated the country’s airspace.

A statement by Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Cioiu on this matter is available on Facebook by the country’s foreign ministry.

Cioiu echoed the words of President Nicusor Dan that Romania’s diplomatic protest against the Russian Federation will be based on the results of investigations into the drone incursions.

“It is unacceptable and intolerable for the Russian Federation to continue violating Romania’s airspace, which is also the airspace of NATO and the European Union. Such actions are unacceptable, and we take them with the utmost seriousness, together with our allies,” the statement reads.

“In connection with these repeated violations, the Ambassador of the Russian Federation was summoned to the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” added Țoiu.

Romanian President Nicușor Dan announced on Sunday that another drone had been shot down over the country’s territory—the third such incident in the past three days.

On July 25, at approximately 8:30 a.m. local time, an enemy drone was shot down 10 km west of the city of Sfântu Gheorghe.

The Ministry of Defense later clarified that this drone was shot down by the same pilot who shot down another drone on Friday.

This refers to the incident on July 24, when the Romanian military shot down a drone that had penetrated deep into the country’s territory using a fighter jet for the first time.

Romanian military officials reported that the downed drone was visually identified as a “Shahed”-type aircraft.
