The head of the Belarusian Security Council Alexander Volfovich supported Alexander Lukashenko’s controversial decision to send “undisciplined” participants in the harvest campaign to the army—to the border with Ukraine. The official made his comments to the “Belarus 1” television channel; the segment aired on July 26.

“It’s worth taking one or two freeloaders and putting them in the ranks for discipline,” Volfovich stated.

According to him, the army is not a correctional facility, but it “has always stood for discipline and been trained in discipline.” “Wherever there are people in uniform, laxity is simply impossible and unacceptable,” the official emphasized.

Volfovich expressed confidence that such a measure would contribute to “the upbringing of our society,” instill discipline, and ensure that the harvest is brought in “at the proper level and on time.”

Earlier, on July 21, during a conference call, Lukashenko ordered that those participants in the harvest campaign who “work poorly” and violate labor discipline be sent to the army. According to the dictator, such people must undergo brief training and then be sent to military units stationed near the Ukrainian border. He also demanded that officials be sent to work in agricultural organizations, threatening them with military service if they failed to comply with this order.
