Drones Brought Russia's Grain Exports To A Standstill At Three Black Sea Terminals At Once

Three deep-water grain terminals on the Black Sea have partially or completely halted grain receipts due to attacks by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. This was reported by the Reuters, citing industry sources.

Specifically, the Novorossiysk Grain Storage Complex, the Novorossiysk Grain Terminal (NGT), and the ZTKT in Taman have halted the acceptance of grain delivered by road.

The agency notes that grain ports in the Sea of Azov halted operations about two weeks ago—after Russian authorities imposed restrictions on the passage of ships through the Kerch Strait.

Since July 22, Russian authorities have banned nighttime shipping in Novorossiysk due to the risk of ships coming under fire, and the number of grain carriers willing to risk entering Russian Black Sea ports has dropped sharply. “The risks have increased, and there are fewer and fewer who are brave or reckless,” said one of Reuters’ sources.

Against this backdrop, the agency notes, Russian wheat exports in July fell to their lowest level since 2017. This is one-third lower than in the same month a year earlier and half the average for July over the past five years.

According to Reuters sources, Russian authorities are discussing the possibility of redirecting grain to Baltic ports, which are currently accepting it without restrictions, as well as to the Caspian Sea.
