Another 11-meter-long Underground Tunnel Under Construction Was Discovered On The Lithuanian-Belarusian Border

Another unfinished tunnel intended for the illegal entry of foreigners into the European Union has been discovered on the Lithuanian-Belarusian border. This was reported by reported by the Lithuanian State Border Guard Service.

Border guards discovered the tunnel using technical equipment that detects ground vibrations. They determined that excavation work was presumably underway near the border, close to the village of Pertakas.

“At this location, Belarus and Lithuania are separated by a small, unnamed stream, and the physical barrier—a metal fence with barbed wire—is installed deeper on Lithuanian territory due to unstable soil. Upon noticing the arriving border guards, about twenty foreigners—young men in civilian clothing—fled into Belarusian territory,” the State Border Guard Service reported.

On the bank of a stream, already on Lithuanian territory, 9.5 meters from the physical barrier, border guards discovered an unfinished underground tunnel approximately 11 meters long. It was intended to run under the patrol road further into Lithuanian territory. Next to the tunnel lay logs, presumably intended to reinforce the vault, as well as excavated sand, and inside—buckets.

“The tunnel was not completed, and there was no exit beyond the patrol road, so illegal migrants or other individuals could not have used this underground passage to enter Lithuania. After the necessary procedural steps were taken as part of the investigation, the tunnel, which was intended for illegal migration, was filled in with earth,” Lithuanian border guards reported.

A pretrial investigation has been launched into the illegal border crossing.
