North Korean Military Personnel Crossed The Border Into South Korea

  • 16.08.2026, 18:19

The border guards opened fire.

South Korean military forces fired warning shots after a group of North Korean soldiers crossed the land border between the two countries. The North Korean soldiers immediately retreated back into their territory.

This was reported by Yonhap.

According to the publication, the incident occurred last week in the eastern part of the Military Demarcation Line (MDL). A group of North Korean soldiers crossed the border while patrolling the demilitarized zone.

The South Korean military responded in accordance with standard procedure:

warning announcements were made as North Korean troops approached the demarcation line;

after they actually crossed the border, warning shots were fired.

Following the shots, the North Korean soldiers returned to their side; no further activity was reported in the area.

This is the first instance of the South Korean military firing warning shots in response to a border violation in 2026.

The situation on the inter-Korean border remains tense. In recent years, the North Korean military has regularly made brief crossings of the demarcation line—this is linked to active construction and reinforcement of defensive structures on the North Korean side.
