Serbian War Criminal Ratko Mladić Has Died In The Hague

He is the one responsible for the genocide of Bosnians in Srebrenica.

Ratko Mladić—the former commander of the Army of the Republika Srpska, who was convicted of genocide and war crimes—has died at the detention center hospital in The Hague, according to the Belgrade television channel Informer.

Mladić was 83 years old.

During the Bosnian War of 1992–1995, Mladić commanded the Serb army, which laid siege to Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, for three years. About 11,000 people died during that time, and in July 1995, approximately 8,000 Bosnians were killed over the course of five days in the town of Srebrenica—the largest mass murder in Europe since World War II.

In May 2011, Mladić was arrested in Serbia. In 2017, the Hague Tribunal sentenced Mladić to life in prison on charges of genocide and crimes against humanity.

Mladić had suffered several strokes; since 2024, he had been in the hospital at the detention center in The Hague, where he was receiving palliative care. Requests for his temporary release to receive medical treatment in Serbia were repeatedly denied.
