Russia is losing more soldiers than it can recruit.
The Russian military is short about 6,000 service members each month compared to the number of people it manages to recruit. Despite active recruitment efforts, Moscow has not yet been able to fully make up for its losses in the war against Ukraine.
This was reported by The Guardian reported this based on information from Western officials.
According to their estimates, Russia continues to mobilize about 1,000 soldiers per day. However, over the past two months, this has not been enough to make up for the losses from those killed and wounded.
“The difference between the number of people Russia is losing in combat and the number it manages to mobilize is about 6,000 people per month,” said one Western official.
According to Western officials, Russia’s inability to quickly replenish its losses may be one of the reasons why Vladimir Putin is intensifying attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure and the civilian population.
Since early July, Russian forces have launched more than 360 missiles at Ukraine. At the same time, Kyiv is facing a shortage of ammunition for its Patriot air defense systems.
Western officials believe that Moscow is seeking to use this tactic to undermine the morale of Ukrainians. One of the targets of the Russian strikes could be Ukraine’s energy infrastructure ahead of the winter season.
A New Mobilization Could Backfire on Russia
A large-scale mobilization remains a problematic option for the Kremlin due to potential political and economic consequences.
After the mobilization was announced in the fall of 2022, approximately one million people left Russia, and a significant number of them were skilled professionals. According to estimates by Western officials, less than half of them have returned.
There is also a practical problem: the Russian military may lack the equipment and command staff needed to fully train a large number of new soldiers.
Meanwhile, Ukraine continues to launch strikes against Russian oil facilities. These attacks are already causing fuel supply problems in certain regions of Russia.
At the same time, Kyiv is calling on its Western partners to increase military aid, particularly the supply of offensive missiles and air defense systems.
