The World's Youngest Reigning Monarch Has Died

The world’s youngest monarch, Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who ruled the Kingdom of Toro in western Uganda, died on August 27. This was announced by the Prime Minister of Uganda, according to the BBC.

Although Uganda is governed by an elected president and parliament, the country has several traditional kingdoms that, despite lacking political power, exert significant cultural influence. Oyo, who was listed by the Guinness Book of World Records as one of the world’s youngest monarchs, ruled over more than two million people. He was the 13th monarch of the Kingdom of Toro, founded in the early 19th century.

The kingdom itself has not yet disclosed the cause of the king’s death, but local media quoted a Ugandan minister who stated that he was in critical condition and undergoing treatment in the United States.

The Kingdom of Toro operates under a hereditary system of monarchical succession. The late monarch was not officially married, but according to the kingdom’s prime minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomire Akiyiki, “the succession to the Crown is assured.”

“His Majesty leaves behind a prince as his heir, whose identity will be officially revealed in due course in accordance with the traditions and customs of the Kingdom of Toro,” he explained.

Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV became King of Toro in western Uganda at the age of just three in 1995 following the death of his father. A regency was then established, which included the Queen Mother, until Oyo turned 18, at which point the official coronation took place.

The young king was highly respected by his people and promoted youth empowerment, education, climate protection, and HIV/AIDS awareness.
