U.S. President Donald Trump has promised to pay every adult U.S. citizen $5,000 if the Republicans retain control of the House of Representatives and the Senate following the upcoming midterm elections in November, according to BBC.
Trump made this statement during a speech at the Republican National Convention in Dallas, Texas.
“If Republicans retain control of the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate, then thanks to our incredible economic success… I will pay every adult citizen of the United States of America a dividend of five thousand dollars,” said the U.S. president.
He explained that this would be “similar to how successful companies pay dividends to investors.”
“The only restriction is that the dividends must be spent in the U.S.,” — Trump added. “We don’t want you to go to Canada and spend the money there. We don’t want you to go to China, to Germany… You have to spend the money in the U.S.,” he said.
As the BBC correspondent at the Republican National Convention notes, the U.S. president appears to be promising such payments to Americans for the first time in history as part of a campaign to win over voters.
Furthermore, it remains unclear exactly who will disburse these funds, how the U.S. government will monitor how they are spent—and, indeed, how legal such payments are.
Trump often puts forward highly unusual ideas during rallies to attract attention, adds the BBC correspondent.
In 2025, the adult population of the United States numbered about 267 million people. This means that paying all of them “Trump dividends” of $5,000 would cost $1.34 trillion (though not all residents of the country are citizens).
Currently, the Democratic Party leads in most public opinion polls and has a strong chance of gaining control of the House of Representatives and even the Senate.
Trump recalled that, throughout U.S. history, the president’s party has often lost midterm elections. “We have to change that,” he said, urging Americans to vote “as if my name were on the ballot.”
During a speech in Texas, Trump said that a Republican Party loss in November would mean that Americans would “lose their borders, lose their tax cuts, and lose their security.”
“You’re in for another living hell, just like two years ago,” the U.S. president added. According to him, the U.S. used to be “a laughingstock to the whole world,” but now no one is laughing at it anymore.
What Else Trump Said: War with Iran and Oil Prices
Before heading to Texas, Trump stated that, in his opinion, the war against Iran would end after the November U.S. elections.
“I think the war will end right after the election because they can’t hold on any longer,” the U.S. president said.
He also commented on the steady rise in energy prices amid the standoff with Iran: on Wednesday, the price of a barrel of oil exceeded $100 for the first time since July.
Iran and the U.S. periodically resume mutual strikes. The 60-day ceasefire between them has expired, and there are virtually no signs of an imminent diplomatic resolution.
The U.S. and Israel launched their first large-scale strikes against Iran on February 28. In response, Tehran attacked Israel, U.S. bases, and U.S. allies in the Persian Gulf, and effectively blocked shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant portion of the world’s oil and gas had passed prior to the war.
“Immediately after the election, oil prices will simply plummet,” Trump told reporters before departing for Texas.
He added that Iran is “doing everything it can to influence the election in order to get a group of people in power that is favorable to them and weak,” who will “leave them alone and allow them to acquire nuclear weapons.”
Iranian officials have repeatedly denied that they intend to develop nuclear weapons.
