The U.S. Congress Has Finally Passed A Law Imposing “severe” Sanctions On Russia

On Thursday, September 17, the U.S. House of Representatives finally passed a bill imposing “hellish sanctions” against Russia and Iran. The bill, authored by the late Senator Lindsey Graham, is now being sent to the president for his signature.

This was reported by Charter97.org, citing H (Twitter) by Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty correspondent Alex Raufoglu.

The bill grants President Trump the authority to impose tariffs of up to 100% on countries that purchase Russian energy resources or assist Russia in circumventing sanctions.

In addition, the bill provides for sanctions against Russian officials, banks, and the shadow fleet, and extends existing sanctions against Iran.

In the final vote, House Resolution 5334 passed with 252 votes in favor and 154 against. Among Republicans, 197 voted in favor and only 6 voted against. Democrats were split: 54 voted in favor and 148 against. An independent member of Congress also supported the bill.

The bill had already secured enough votes for passage before the count was complete—at one point, 217 members of the House of Representatives had already voted in favor.

As a reminder, on August 7 the U.S. Senate approved “hellish sanctions” against Russia and Iran—86 senators voted in favor of Lindsey Graham’s bill, while 11 voted against it.
