"I'm Looking At The Prices And I Don't Understand What Happened."

Belarusians are discussing housing costs.

A Threads user, tatyana_.noir, asked about the reasons for high apartment prices.

"Guys, please explain to me why apartment prices have gone up so much in Belarus?" she writes. “Is it because a lot of Russians have moved here, or are there other reasons?

I’m honestly a little shocked right now. I look at the prices and just don’t understand what’s happened to the real estate market.”

Threads users cited reasons for the high cost of housing. The website Charter97.org shares some comments:

- Russians are fleeing the war and bringing their narrow-minded worldview with them to Belarus. It’s no secret that they’re buying up everything available at higher prices than the Belarusians.

- There are a lot of factors at play here. Russians are one of them, but not the most decisive one.

- I don’t understand why no one is pointing out the main reason. Land for housing construction in Minsk is hardly ever allocated.

- People used to keep their money in banks. Now you can’t keep money there—they might simply refuse to return it. There’s no access to foreign banks or stock exchanges, so people are putting their money into real estate.

- Prices are sky-high only in Minsk. In regional centers, they’ve risen by an order of magnitude less.

- Because housing is supposed to be unaffordable.
