A highly developed sense of smell plays an important role. Cats are able to distinguish their owner’s scent from that of a stranger. In experiments, the animals spent more time examining unfamiliar scents, indicating an ability to recognize people based on sensory cues.

Human behavior also plays a significant role. In a study involving 119 volunteers, researchers observed how they interacted with shelter cats. It turned out that the animals interacted better with those who noticed their signals and did not try to constantly control the interaction.
Therefore, one of the best ways to earn a cat’s trust is to let it determine the distance on its own. Attempts to constantly pick up the animal, pet it, or keep it close against its will can, on the contrary, hinder the formation of a bond.
At the same time, much depends on the specific cat’s personality and past experiences. Studies show that animals accustomed to human presence from an early age may be more willing to interact. In males, hormonal factors can also play a role.
Scientists have not discovered a universal way to make any cat love a person. However, calm behavior, paying attention to the animal’s cues, and respecting its personal space significantly increase the chances of winning the pet’s trust.
